Διαγωνισμός του CERN για σχολεία

Πριν από μερικούς μήνες δίναμε συγχαρητήρια στην ομάδα «Σύντροφοι του Οδυσσέα» της Βαρβακείου σχολής για την επιτυχία τους να κερδίσουν στο διαγωνισμό Beamline For Schools του CERN. Σήμερα το CERN ανακοίνωσε τη διεξαγωγή του για το 2015.

Το έπαθλο; Ίδιο με το φετινό: η δυνατότητα να έρθει μια ομάδα μαθητών εδώ και να διεξάγει το δικό της πείραμα χρησιμοποιώντας μια από τις δέσμες σωματιδίων από τους επιταχυντές του εργαστηρίου!

Ο διαγωνισμός είναι ανοιχτός σε ομάδες μέχρι και 30 μαθητών άνω των 16 ετών, εννέα από τους οποίους, αν κερδίσει η ομάδα τους, θα έρθουν στο CERN για να στήσουν και να κάνουν τα πειράματά τους. Οι ομάδες μπορούν να αποτελούνται είτε από ένα, είτε από περισσότερα του ενός συνεργαζόμενα σχολεία. Το πρώτο βήμα είναι να εγγραφείτε! Περισσότερες πληροφορίες για το διαγωνισμό και τον τρόπο συμμετοχής υπάρχουν διαθέσιμες στην ιστοσελίδα του.

Ημερομηνίες-κλειδιά είναι η 31η Ιανουαρίου 2015 που είναι η διορία για την δήλωση συμμετοχών και η 31η Μαρτίου 2015 που είναι η διορία για την υποβολή των προτάσεων. Για το δεύτερο βήμα χρειάζεται ένα γραπτό κείμενο, καθώς και ένα μονόλεπτο βιντεάκι που να περιγράφεται το πείραμα όπως παραδείγματος χάριν το παρακάτω από την Ελληνική ομάδα που κέρδισε το 2014. Επίσης, για την ενημέρωση όλων, η ομάδα του διαγωνισμού θα διεξάγει ένα Google+ hangout στα Αγγλικά στις 4 Δεκεμβρίου 2014 στις 6μμ ώρα Ελλάδας στο κανάλι του CERN στο YouTube. Σε αυτό, ερευνητές του CERN καθώς και οι “Σύντροφοι του Οδυσσέα” του Βαρβακείου  θα μπορούν να απαντήσουν στα ερωτήματά σας. Το περσινό ενημερωτικό βιντεάκι υπάρχει εδώ.

update: και επειδή τα άκουσα λίγο από φίλους και συναδέλφους, να προσθέσω ότι το Beamline for Schools είναι ένα από τα πολλά και ενδιαφέροντα projects με τα οποία ασχολείται το Development Office του CERN το οποίο πρόσφατα εγκαινίασε και τη σελίδα Giving to CERN, ώστε να μπορεί το CERN να προσφέρει περισσότερα πίσω στην κοινωνία… 🙂

Greek school winning CERN beam line competition

Many congratulations to Odysseus’ Comrades the Greek school team from Varvakios Pilot School in Athens, for being one of the two winning teams of CERN’s beam line for schools competition!

Odysseus’ Comrades are a team of 12. Their proposal is to look at the decay of charged pions (particles containing a quark and an antiquark) to investigate the weak force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature.

An extract from their proposal A Nature’s Preference:

Weak force keeps the Sun and the other stars glowing and gives life to life. Studying the history of particle physics we found out that weak force was the motive power for major discoveries in CERN: pion decay to electron, neutral currents, W and Z and recently Higgs boson. So in relation to 60th anniversary of CERN we decided to propose an experiment related to a peculiar property of weak force, namely its preference to left-handed particles and right-handed antiparticles.

Elwood :: There and back again and then some more… (2011 edition)

Time to end this long period of silence! It’s been about a year and a half since my last update and the blame is not mine — look at the owner of this blog! During this time I traveled to many places (but I also missed some trips thanks to someone’s forgetfulness…). But let’s focus on the positive side of things! I am here, writing to you once more and for today I have a set of pictures from many nice places; some of them interesting, some not so much.

I will open with a not-so-interesting picture from an otherwise beautiful place (thanks C.!). This one is from Morges, a village near Lausanne:

After this, we boarded on the plane and ended up in Madison, Wisconsin! Although I spent a lot of time indoors, in the few walks that we managed to do around the city I have to admin that I loved it and instantly became a favorite. The first picture is near a spot called Picnic point,near the university apartment neighborhood Eagle Heights. In the distance you can see the Wisconsin state capitol.

Somewhere nearby the previous point we decided to get some rest and a photo together (I believe it’s our first one… awwwwww):

Just before leaving to return back to Europe, we ended up on the Memorial Union Terrace, which is also overlooking lake Mendota as the previous photos. It was the ideal way to say goodbye to the place and friends there…

Oh, and by the way, the reason for the trip can be seen in the photo below. Here you can see me posing with the PhD abstracts of Kira, Christos and Marc. Good times guys eh?

Back to Europe now and a short trip to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine near Geneva. A nice walk next to the Valserine river is always refreshing when the weather is warm…

Fast forward and we end up in Paris! We made a first stop in the Parc at cite universitaire (or at least that’s the parc I think it is… it’s been tooooo long ago!)

The next day we visited Versailles… where the beds are small (for normal people that is, for me it was just perfect)

and there are long corridors between rooms…. too much walking… that’s probably how they exercised back then…

A short visit to Brussels followed. Too much rain, not many interesting stuff. Unfortunately due to our schedule we could not visit the Atomium… at least we got a glimpse of it from the outside.

Back to France and a visit to Vlasis and Margaret in Montpellier! The most interesting photos happened in the Cité de Carcassonne, the fortress that stands out of the rest of the city.

The last photo shoot of the year happened in Greece! And more specifically near the Byzantine spa complex that bears the same name as the region: Άγκιστρο (Agkistro). There we stayed in a beautiful wooden hotel room and woke up with a wonderful view:

Μια διαφορετική Ελλάδα : Τα Βελανίδια Της Τζιάς

Όραμα χρειάζεται… τόσο απλά.

Με χρηματοδότηση από το kickstarter, βοήθεια από εθελοντές και πολύ πείσμα η Marcie Mayer έχει βάλει στοίχημα να μετατρέψει τα βελανίδια της Τζιάς σε πηγή εισοδήματος όπως ήταν και 60 χρόνια πριν… Πρόσφατα έδωσε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ομιλία στο TEDxThessaloniki:
