ProtonMail : End-to-end encrypted email by CERN & MIT folks

Privacy is getting more and more important these days. ProtonMail is a new email service developed by a team of scientists working at CERN with the goal to provide a secure email with end-to-end encryption. With ProtonMail, even if someone steals your login password they still cannot read your email because they need the decryption password which is different! Not even ProtonMail can read your email as they are all stored encrypted on their server and decrypted on your PC when you download them. It’s protected by the Swiss privacy laws, offers full anonymity and other cool security features.

I just got mine after sending a request for an invitation and contributing to their indiegogo campaign which has already raised twice the targeted amount!

Greek school winning CERN beam line competition

Many congratulations to Odysseus’ Comrades the Greek school team from Varvakios Pilot School in Athens, for being one of the two winning teams of CERN’s beam line for schools competition!

Odysseus’ Comrades are a team of 12. Their proposal is to look at the decay of charged pions (particles containing a quark and an antiquark) to investigate the weak force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature.

An extract from their proposal A Nature’s Preference:

Weak force keeps the Sun and the other stars glowing and gives life to life. Studying the history of particle physics we found out that weak force was the motive power for major discoveries in CERN: pion decay to electron, neutral currents, W and Z and recently Higgs boson. So in relation to 60th anniversary of CERN we decided to propose an experiment related to a peculiar property of weak force, namely its preference to left-handed particles and right-handed antiparticles.

Acronyms

Physicists here at CERN love acronyms! Some of them are complete tongue-twisters (try pronouncing MWRG!), others sound not awfully bad (like CRUZET or CRAFT). Learning these fast is a big challenge for newcomers 🙂

This not-so-great photo shows the path the protons follow before they collide at the very center of the CMS detector (which is just a couple of meters from where this photo was taken). In a few weeks, the so-called Beam Pipe will be placed here and radially outwards the CMS Silicon Tracker will take its rightful place as the CMS detector is preparing for the startup of the Large Hadron Collider.

Now, why do I write all this? Well, while sitting in a meeting I heard these three coming up in the discussion and felt a bit nostalgic. Last time I had heard them was in 2009 when we were again preparing for an LHC start up. Interesting times.

CRUZET : Cosmic RUn at ZEro Tesla (full CMS-wide test run with the magnet off, without beam, but looking at particles offered to us for free by cosmic radiation)

Δημοσιογραφία

Στις 4 το πρωί της 16ης Δεκεμβρίου 2009, στο CMS είχαμε συγκρούσεις με ενέργεια 2.36 TeV στο κέντρο μάζας κάτω από συνθήκες δέσμης “quiet beam”. Eίχα την τύχη να έχω βάρδια εκείνο το βράδυ στο trigger του πειράματος. Πηγή και copyright: CERN

Προ ημερών, με προσέγγισε ένας δημοσιογράφος της εφημερίδας “Δημοκρατία” με σκοπό να κάνουμε μία συνέντευξη περι CERN. Γενικότερα δε νιώθω πολύ άνετα με δημοσιογράφους, οπότε συμφώνησα να γίνει μόνο γραπτά ώστε να έχω έλεγχο του τι θα ειπωθεί.

Σήμερα η συνέντευξη αυτή βγήκε online (δεν έχω ιδέα αν μπήκε και στην έντυπη έκδοση είναι και στην έντυπη έκδοση τελικά) με τον κολακευτικό αν μη τι άλλο τίτλο “Eλληνας πίσω από το Νόμπελ Φυσικής!” (και σε pdf).

Δεν θα αναλύσω και πολύ το γεγονός ότι ενώ ανέφερα ρητά πως οι όροι χρήσης της φωτογραφίας (που είναι από το επίσημο αρχείο του CERN) απαιτούν την αναφορά της πηγής, αγνοήθηκα πλήρως. Πταίσμα. Aναιρώ, φαίνεται ότι στην έντυπη έκδοση τα έχουν σωστά.

Αυτό που με ενόχλησε (και ευτυχώς εδώ το πήραν στην πλάκα γενικώς) ήταν ο τίτλος ο οποίος ήταν το λιγότερο ανακριβής και γι’αυτό το λόγο έστειλα σχετικό mail στην εφημερίδα:

Θα ήθελα να επισημάνω ότι ποτέ δεν υποστήριξα-ανέφερα ότι βρίσκομαι “πισω
από το Νόμπελ” όπως ο τίτλος αλλά και η εισαγωγή του κειμένου αναφέρουν.

Καταλαβαίνω ότι αυτό μπορεί να φαίνεται πιασάρικο, αλλά είναι ανακριβές,
υπερβολικό και υποτιμάει τη δουλειά όλων εδώ, Ελλήνων και μη.

Πλην αυτού, το υπόλοιπο άρθρο είναι εξαιρετικό.

Η απάντηση που πήρα από το δημοσιογράφο είναι πως δε συμφωνεί με την επισήμανση ότι υποτιμάται η δουλειά των επιστημόνων και πως το κάθε ρεπορταζ έχει πολλές ερμηνείες. Θα διαφωνήσω και πάλι, το πρόβλημά μου δεν ήταν το ρεπορτάζ (όπως το έγραψα άλλωστε) αλλά ο τίτλος που είναι άσχετος με ότι ειπώθηκε αλλά και με την πραγματικότητα!

Τέλοσπάντων, αυτά ήθελα να πω για να τα βγάλω από μέσα μου και να ξεκαθαρίσω τη θέση μου επί τουτου. Συνεχίζουμε με χαμόγελο 🙂

ενημέρωση (15/10): μόλις είδα και το έντυπο άρθρο και έχει κάτι ακόμα πιο απαράδεκτο παραδίπλα, όπου γράφει πως είμαι μέλος της “επιτυχημένης ομάδας του βραβευμένου Πήτερ Χιγκς για το CERN”. Πιο λάθος δε μπορείς να είσαι… σε πολλά επίπεδα… ούτε “ομάδα” έχει ο Higgs στο CERN, ούτε έχω καμία σχέση με τον ίδιο και ούτε καν ήμουν αναμεμειγμένος άμεσα σε ομάδα των πειραμάτων που έκανε τη σχετική ανάλυση. Λυπάμαι που το λέω, αλλά ο τίτλος και ο υπότιτλος με κάνουν να μετανιώνω για τη συνέντευξη, καθώς είναι τελείως εσφαλμένα. Τουλάχιστον επιβεβαιώνουν την άποψη που είχα για την πλειοψηφία των δημοσιογράφων.
